- The Hawaii State Judiciary recognized Judge Steven Alm as “Jurist of the Year” for his outstanding work in developing, implementing and promoting Hawaii’s Opportunity Probation with Enforcement (HOPE) Program (which NPAMC recognizes as a national model).
The promising HOPE Program continues to receive considerable attention and support. The Friends of HOPE held a conference entitled, “The Criminal Justice System Meets Addiction Medicine: A Discussion Around Project HOPE,” featuring nationally known experts Dr. Robert DuPont (founding director of NIDA and Drug Czar under President Nixon), Dr. Michael Kaufman (director of the Ontario Medical Association’s Physician Health Program), Dr. Kevin Kunz (first president of the American Board of Addiction Medicine), and Dr. Larry Schlesinger (Board Certified expert in Addiction Medicine and Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine).
The Hawaii Ignition Interlock Task Force is studying ways to integrate ignition interlock into Hawaii law. The group plans to finalize its legislative recommendations in October or November and present them to the 2010 state legislature in January.
